Anastasios Maraslis – Full Professional Profile

Anastasios Maraslis is a self-made entrepreneur with over 33 years of hands-on experience in marine insurance, ship management, maritime finance, international trade, and risk prevention systems. At 62 years old, he continues to play an active role in shaping the future of small and medium-sized shipowners by offering smart, structured solutions that bridge financial resilience, claims efficiency, and operational risk minimization.

He is the founder and President of Marasco Marine Ltd, a Cyprus-based specialist marine insurance brokerage and consultancy firm, operating internationally since 1991. The company maintains a representative office in Piraeus, Greece, and is widely recognized for providing tailor-made services to the global shipping community, with an emphasis on serving small and medium fleet operators—those who often lack the risk management tools available to the larger players.

Throughout his extensive career, Mr. Maraslis has been a trusted figure in the Greek and international shipping markets. His journey began as an underwriter for CIGNA Hellas (1985–1987), responsible for large multinational accounts across Greece, Cyprus, the Middle East, and Africa—including clients such as Ciba-Geigy, Archirodon, J&P Group, Arabian Helicopters, and ARAMCO. His early exposure to global logistics and corporate insurance needs gave him a solid foundation for the entrepreneurial path that followed.

In 1987, he transitioned into marine insurance broking, setting up his own practice at the hub of Akti Miaouli. He gained swift recognition and trust within the Greek shipping community and was soon tribunalized by Lloyd’s of London, earning the title of Lloyd’s Correspondent. By 1991, he had founded Marasco Marine Ltd, driven by a vision to protect shipowners through precision risk evaluation, reliable partnerships with A-rated underwriters, and the highest levels of claims management integrity.

Over three decades later, Marasco Marine Ltd remains a fiercely independent, solutions-driven marine insurance firm. It provides a broad spectrum of services—H&M, P&I, War Risks, K&R, L.O.H, Delay Insurance and Crew P&I Deductible buyback programs—offered through tailor-made, competitively priced insurance policies. The company’s signature “System Approach” framework and its Risk Prevention Culture allows shipowners to proactively manage risk exposures across claims handling, H&M claims risk mapping, crew claims deduction programs, and Trade disruption coverage.

A defining element of Mr. Maraslis’ leadership is his long-term commitment to empowering smaller players in a highly volatile and consolidated shipping market. His belief that even the smallest fleet deserves access to elite tools has led him to develop unique risk prevention modules and digital strategies that reduce claims frequency, lower premium outflows, and keep clients competitive on a global stage.

One of his hallmark innovations was the creation of Marasco Marine Ltd’s Special Purposes Advisors’ Board, launched in 2018. This committee—composed of top-tier naval architects, marine surveyors, shipping lawyers, claims experts, and maritime engineers—serves as an integrated support team for clients navigating claims, detentions, damages, and disputes. The board acts not just reactively but preemptively, assisting shipowners with tailored prevention techniques to mitigate incidents before they happen.

Marasco Marine Ltd’s consistent growth and international reach are the result of Mr. Maraslis’s leadership, credibility, and industry foresight. His firm's footprint now includes close collaborations with underwriters and risk consultants in London, Dubai, Singapore, China, Scandinavia, and across Europe. The firm’s services are particularly designed for operators who work in high-risk routes or politically sensitive areas, offering meaningful protection against disruptions that traditional insurance often overlooks.

In addition to his core work in insurance, Mr. Maraslis is also the founder and controlling shareholder of Shipowners Trust International Corporation (S.T.I.C.), established in 1997. Originally launched as a cost-reduction consortium with U.S.-based investors, S.T.I.C. helped small- and mid-sized shipowners gain access to bulk service discounts and payment protection guarantees. The group’s initial members included iconic Greek shipping names like the late Mark Scoufalos of Union Commercial and Mr. Pateras of Leandros Shipping.

After acquiring full ownership of S.T.I.C. in 2004, Mr. Maraslis transformed the company into a commercial dry bulk operator and ship manager, managing tonnage from Handymax to Capesize and successfully chartering to major global players such as Mitsui, Daewoo, Bunge, PotashCorp, China Shenhua, Uralkali, Zijin Mining, and Atlas Iron.

Beyond the shipping arena, Mr. Maraslis is a published writer and thought leader. His book titled "Λύκος ή Πρόβατο;" ("Wolf or Sheep?") was recognized as a bestseller in Greece. It explores personal development, ethical dilemmas, and the psychology of leadership and decision-making in a turbulent world. His writing style is defined by its emotional clarity, depth, and an unflinching examination of human behavior.

His passion for writing and reflection is matched by a commitment to family and nature. Despite frequent travel between Cyprus, Greece, and London, Mr. Maraslis always carves out time to retreat to the mountains of Ioannina, where he balances business with moments of tranquility, environmental appreciation, and quality family life.

In May 2025, Mr. Maraslis inspired and initiated the development of the acclaimed article “The Silent Revolution in Maritime Risk Prevention: 5 Human-Centric Tech Hacks That Can Transform Shipping”, authored by maritime strategist Harilaos Petrakakos and published by Maritime Economies and Cyprus Shipping News. The article sparked meaningful dialogue across the shipping industry, highlighting how well-structured, people-centered innovations could dramatically lower claims and financial losses for shipowners.

Throughout his distinguished career, Mr. Maraslis has been featured in respected maritime publications such as Lloyd’s List, Trade Winds, and the Baltic Exchange, all praising his unwavering dedication to ethical broking, his predictive risk models, and his capacity to lead change at the intersection of marine insurance, ship operations, and financial planning.

Today, he continues to innovate. Under the Marasco Marine brand, he is developing new AI-powered risk dashboards, mobile apps for crew health monitoring, and Trade disruption insurance schemes integrated into real-time voyage data. These innovations are aligned with his core mission: to make resilience simple, affordable, and accessible to those who need it most.
